SWIMMING: Carlin finishes fourth in Russia

JAZZ Carlin missed out on a World Championship medal by 0.4 seconds in Russia on Sunday.

The former Swindon Tigershark, now based in Bath, finished fourth in the women’s 400m freestyle event in Kazan, the tiniest of margins off a podium place.

After qualifying sixth-fastest from the heats, Carlin clocked a time of 4:03.74 to come home behind Katie Ledecky of the USA, Dutchwoman Sharon Van Rouwendaal and Aussie Jessica Ashwood.

“I gave it my best shot,” said Carlin. “When you get to a World Championship, you’re really racing the best in the world. That was my best today and to come fourth is really disappointing.

“I would have loved to be on the podium but that’s the way it goes sometimes.

“I’ve got a few days off now so it will be nice to get a few days rest and move on ready for the 800m.”

Carlin returns to action on Friday in the 800m freestyle event.
