EQUESTRIAN: Wiltshire trio help GB to silver

THREE Wiltshire eventers helped Great Britain secure team silver at the FEI European Championships at Blair Castle.

Kitty King, Holly Woodhead and Laura Collett were part of the 12-strong team which came second at the event in Scotland, with Germany claiming gold and France bronze.

King, who is based at Lower Stanton St Quintin, was the highest-placed British finisher in fourth on board Persimmon.

She said afterwards: “I knew I was going first before I came up here, I wasn’t really thinking of a high individual placing I just wanted to go out and get a good solid start for the team, and just didn’t want to let the team down, so I wasn’t really thinking or focussing on individual placings.

“I wanted to go and get the best out of my horse and I think he’s really delivered this week, he’s been on really good form and really on side with me, so I couldn’t have asked for more and just gutted we’re point one behind third place. To get the silver medal with the team is just absolutely brilliant.”

Woodhead, who rides out of Day House Farm on the outskirts of Swindon, was the highest-placed under 25 rider with DHI Lupison.

She said: “I’m relieved. I finished and I’ve completed my first senior championships – I’m over the moon. I’m thrilled with the horse and our performance it could have gone better but it also could have gone a lot worse, I’m really looking forward to our future.”

Collett, who finised 13th individually on board Grand Manoeuvre, said: “It’s been amazing to be part of the squad, all the support has been brilliant and hopefully we’ll have another chance.”
