SWINDON boxer Jamie Cox made light work of his Romanian opponent Ferenc Albert on Saturday night, establishing a first round knock-out to retain his WBO European super middlewight title and set his hopes of a world title fight firmly on track.
The 28-year-old has now won the last three of his fights by knock-out, and continued his same scintillating form in the National Stadium, Dublin, after twice sending Albert down to the canvas within the opening 60 seconds.
Dishing out right hooks, Cox was able to continually keep his opponent on the back foot, in a tie which seemed like a mismatch from the first bell.
Cox told waiting media immediately after the fight: “That’s a hat-trick of first round knockouts, no one can doubt my power at this weight.
“If that was with Smith or Fielding in there tonight they’d have been knocked out as well. The winner out of those two is not the best in the country and the public know it, I’ll have too much power for them, I’m the best and when I get my chance I’ll prove it.”
Cox won his WBO title in July after knocking out Blas Miguel Martinez, and now looks set to face Arthur Abraham or Fedor Chudinov for the world title if a deal can be put in place.
Cox’s fight record now stands at a healthy 20 victories since turning professional, with 12 coming from knock-out and no defeats incurred along the way.
